By the description given, are you using an eMac? These models map the function keys differently than other models. In the Keyboard pane of Keyboard & Mouse, is the option 'Use all F1, F2, etc. Keys as standard function keys' unchecked? (This option may not appear, as from the description of the F11 and F12 keys, you are not using an Apple notebook.) Secondly, can you remember the last thing that happened before your keys quit working? Did you set anything from any other application or did you get a faded out screen with a black box in the middle, saying 'You need to restart your computer.'
Control–Down Arrow: Show all windows of the front app. Option–Volume Up: Open Sound preferences. This works with any of the volume keys. Option–Shift–Volume Up or Option–Shift–Volume Down: Adjust the sound volume in smaller steps. Option–Keyboard Brightness Up: Open Keyboard preferences. This works with either Keyboard Brightness key. Keyboard shortcuts or hotkeys are specific combinations of two or more keys on your. Keyboard shortcuts in Skype (version 8) for Windows Desktop, and Mac.
In five languages? (The last event I mentioned is referred to as a 'kernel panic'.
Thirdly, did you go to Sound? The options you mentioned match that of the Input and Output tabs of the Sound preference pane. Thank you for replying so far. I'm simply trying to get to the bottom of this issue.:). I did try the checked box for the F1,F2 etc.
I checked it and tried the buttons, and did the opposite, and nothing! And nowhere on the keyboard list is there anything for volume. I dont' remember what happened before because my husband was the one on the computer and he asked me why they volume button wasn't working so I have no idea what happened!
But I don't this that box with the message came out because he would have asked me.lol But NONE of the F keys are doing anything! None of the functions work. The brightness, volume, mute etc. Thanks for your persistence!
I appreciate it! It appears you have an eMac or an early iMac from your keyboard's description. To get a better answer, please indicate if you are running an eMac, iMac G3, G4, or G5. To help you determine this, the iMac G5 and Intel stand up completely flat, and are one unit with the flatscreen. The G4 sits on 'half an Apple core' or sphere, and has a screen attached to an arm.
The G3 looks like a large rounded computer, and the eMac looks similar to the early iMacs, except that it is pure white, and NOT transparent like the iMac G3 Snow. However, to flush the computer's memory, and to try and coerce the keyboard into working again, turn your computer off (In the menubar spanning the top of the screen, open the Apple menu, and click Shut Down. Click Shut Down again in the dialog box that appears.) When you are done, unplug the keyboard from the USB port, unplug the computer, and hold the power button for 15 seconds. Plug the computer and keyboard back in. Turn the computer on, and before you hear the first chime, hold down Cmd+Opt+P+R. This is a keyboard hotkey, which will reset the parameter RAM.
Cmd is the command key, indicated by a four-leaf clover loop. Hold that combination down, if you have a G3/G4/G5 until you hear the Mac chime four times. Try booting up, and see if the suggestion provided fixes the problem. Also, in another post, you had mentioned the screen on the same computer (I'm assuming) being messed up. Has this problem been fixed as well?
Intel Mac:: Volume And Brightness Keys Not Working With New Keyboard On It Apr 19, 2012 I just purchased a new wired keyboard for imac and brightness and volume control keys not working. I have tried adjusting keyboard settings. I have software version 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade software. Info:iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8) Similar Messages:. ADVERTISEMENT Jun 1, 2012 After the cat spilled a glass of water on my wireless keyboard I had to get a new one. I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was. When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard).
I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them. Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8) Mar 21, 2012 I have a 2011 (?) macbook air and ever since my trip to the genius bar for a battery issue my function keys don't work after I wake it up (just opening screen). May also be related to last firmware update? I have checked the function key mapping in settings and they are normal.
The volume key launches Expose and the brightness keys (and others) don't do anything. A reboot helps but only untill the first time I put it to sleep (close/open lid).

Info: MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.3) Aug 21, 2014 Really stumped by this. Recently (I think it was after a MacOS update but I'm not sure) my brightness and volume keys stopped working on my 2011 13' MacBook Air running MacOS 10.9.4. The F keys still work i.e.
If I press Fn-F10, I get the expected effect from pressing F10, but if I just press F10, volume remains unchanged (should get muted). Mission Control, Launchpad, and media keys (rewind, play/pause, ff) all work. Using Karabiner, I checked to make sure the keys generate correct events.
Pressing the brightness keys generates 0x3 and 0x2. Pressing the volume keys generates 0x7, 0x1, and 0x0, which are the expected key codes defined in evkeymap.h, the header file for HID. I can also adjust volume and brightness using the sliders in the appropriate section of 'System Preferences.'
So volume and brightness itself can be changed. They keyboard keys themselves work and produce correct keycodes. But whatever operating system feature (HID?) that is supposed to read the keyboard input and translate it into commands to the display and sound drivers doesn't work.
I've tried all the obvious stuff (restart, safe mode, toggle the Function key option in System Preferences-Keyboard). I've reset SMC and PRAM. Nothing has worked so far. The only other thing I can think of is that a while back (before this problem started occuring) I got annoyed by the power button in the top-right corner of the keyboard, which I would occasionally hit accidentally. I searched for a way to disable it, and I think I found something - now it only does something if it's held for 2 seconds. A quick up-down strike does not do anything. Perhaps in tweaking some setting to achieve this behavior (I don't remember what I did), I screwed up something with the brightness/volume keys, but this screw up only became evident later.
Info: MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) Jan 28, 2010 I have recently put windows 7 professional on my aluminum macbook, installed all the drivers, and so forth. I hook up my macbook up to an external monitor, and use a logitech dinovo keyboard for a mac. However, when I am in windows 7, the function keys do not adjust volume, brightness, and any other of the functions. Jan 21, 2009 Whenever I press on the volume key or brightness, I have to hold it down for 3 seconds for it to change, it didn't do that before, I messed it up, can it be fixed? May 25, 2012 My keyboard stopped working so I went to the apple store to replace it with another one. Now I am back home and the keys at the very top are not working correctly (volumn F12 shows the dashboard, F11 takes the screen up and away, F8 pause button shows spaces, etc.).
What should I do to correct this problem - I assume I probably need to download some type of softwear but what? I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 desktop - 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), new keyboard problems Dec 11, 2009 I have a 15 inch aluminum macbook pro, Snow Leopard and recent updates all installed, but i noticed something on my friends 13 inch macbook pro that mine doesn't do. On my friends, when you press the screen dim/bright button (F1, F2), its a gradual transistion, but on mine it just jumps down a notch.
For example, when you hold down the dim button on my friends MBP, it the screen dims in a similar way as to when you put your finger over the iSight camera, it fades to a dimmer screen. Feb 4, 2008 A few minutes ago I noticed that my MBA's keyboard was not lighting up as it's supposed to. A little experimenting and I found the solution (you may kick yourself, this is so simple): The F5 key decreases keyboard brightness. The F6 key increases keyboard brightness. The icons on these two keys are the clue.
Oct 18, 2009 I use my MBP hooked up to an NEC display with an Apple wired keyboard. Is there any way to have the F1/F2 keys still control the brightness on the MBP display? They currently don't do anything. Sep 12, 2009 I have a MBP with an apple wireless keyboard. The keyboard has brightness keys on it but they have recently stopped working.
It is strange as the keys on the MBP still work but the ones on the bluetooth keyboard, placed exactly in the same spot (the wireless KB and the Macbook pro's KB are exactly the same), don't. Jun 27, 2012 Simple as that. Any idea how I turned this off by accident? Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4) May 5, 2012 My two-year-old daughter was messing with the keyboard on my iMac, and now the keys on the keyboard are not functioning as they were before. The delete key doesn't work, 'a' types a symbol-topped 'a' followed by the copyright symbol, etc. I've restores the factory settings to the function keys in system preferences, but the problem persists. Info: Keyboard, Mac OS X (10.5.8) Jun 15, 2012 Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manager should appear.
